Struck by the novelty, I dug into my pocket, even though we had both kept walking, and examined my change. I caught up to him and said, “I don’t have a dime, but here’s a quarter.” A man walking in my direction said cheerfully as we passed, “Can you spare a dime? You will have good luck today!”Īs an old-timey guy, I was put in mind of the Depression tune, “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?” And now, nine decades later, someone was asking me for 10 cents.
